Morgan Stanley Earns $3.03 a Share as Equity Trading Jumps…

Morgan Stanley reported a 41% surge in equity trading revenue to $5.80 billion in the third quarter of 2026, while its Wealth Management division attracted $232.4 billion in net new assets. The results pushed earnings to $3.03 per share, ahead of the $2.91 consensus estimate compiled by LSEG.

The Wall Street bank generated $20.34 billion in net revenues, up approximately 12% from $18.22 billion a year earlier. Net income attributable to Morgan Stanley reached $4.91 billion, compared with $4.61 billion in the third quarter of 2025, when earnings stood at $2.80 per share.

Despite beating expectations, Morgan Stanley shares fell during Wednesday’s trading session. Reuters reported the stock down approximately 3.8% in afternoon trading on October 14, as stronger-than-expected US inflation weighed on equities and raised concerns about further Federal Reserve interest-rate increases.

Equity Trading Revenue Climbs 41% as Fixed Income Slips

Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Securities division generated $10.03 billion in net revenues, up from $8.52 billion a year earlier. Equity trading accounted for the largest contribution, climbing to $5.80 billion from $4.12 billion.

The bank attributed the improvement to strong performance across businesses and regions, supported by client engagement and particularly strong activity in Asia.

According to CNBC’s reporting on StreetAccount estimates, equity trading revenue exceeded expectations by approximately $909 million, making the division a central driver of the earnings beat.

Fixed-income trading moved in the opposite direction. Revenue declined 7% to $2.01 billion from $2.17 billion, reflecting weaker credit activity, particularly in securitized products, and lower structured activity in commodities.

Chief Financial Officer Sharon Yeshaya told Reuters that unexpected increases in interest rates had widened credit spreads and made holding bond inventories more challenging.

Investment banking revenue increased a comparatively modest 2% to $2.16 billion. Advisory revenue rose to $887 million from $684 million as completed mergers and acquisitions supported fees, while equity underwriting fell to $525 million from $652 million.

The divergence highlights the uneven recovery in capital markets. Active equity trading helped Morgan Stanley generate higher revenues even as fixed-income conditions remained difficult and IPO underwriting activity softened.

Wealth Management Reports Record $9.07 Billion Revenue

Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management business reported record quarterly net revenues of $9.07 billion, according to the bank’s October 14 earnings release, up approximately 10% from $8.23 billion a year earlier.

The division generated $2.76 billion in pre-tax income, equivalent to a 30.4% pre-tax margin, supported by higher asset management fees and net interest income.

Net new assets reached $232.4 billion, compared with $81.0 billion in the corresponding quarter last year. Fee-based asset flows also increased sharply to $80.5 billion from $41.9 billion.

However, the composition of those inflows is important. Morgan Stanley disclosed that just over half of the net new assets were associated with IPO-related activity.

Reuters reported that the flows were connected partly to the SpaceX IPO, including holdings transferred into Morgan Stanley accounts following the company’s public listing. Such asset transfers expand the bank’s advised asset base but should not be treated as equivalent to new cash deposits.

Across Wealth and Investment Management, total client assets reached $10.5 trillion.

Asset management revenues within Wealth Management rose to $5.54 billion from $4.79 billion, while net interest income increased to $2.23 billion from $1.99 billion.

The longer-term question is how effectively Morgan Stanley converts the larger asset base into recurring fees. The 30.4% margin demonstrates substantial profitability, although asset growth does not automatically translate into a proportional increase in earnings.

Morgan Stanley Beats Estimates as JPMorgan and Wells Fargo Show Mixed Results

Morgan Stanley’s earnings beat follows a mixed opening to the third-quarter reporting season among major US banks.

As FinanceFeeds reported in its October 13 bank earnings roundup, JPMorgan Chase posted earnings of $5.57 per share against an LSEG consensus of $5.93, while reported revenue reached $50.2 billion.

Wells Fargo reported earnings of $1.87 per share on revenue of $21.87 billion, beating profit expectations but missing revenue estimates. Its performance illustrated the different pressures facing banks with greater exposure to lending and net interest income.

Goldman Sachs, meanwhile, reported earnings of $17.01 per share and strong equity trading performance, reinforcing the importance of market activity to investment banking groups.

Morgan Stanley’s stronger equity trading and substantial wealth inflows distinguish its quarterly performance, although its decline in fixed-income revenue reflects some of the same challenges facing competitors.

The broader earnings picture has also been affected by Bank of America’s regulatory charges. FinanceFeeds’ October 14 analysis of Bank of America and Morgan Stanley examines the different factors affecting the banks’ earnings and share-price reactions.

22.6% ROTCE Shows Strong Returns, but Profitability Faces Pressure

Morgan Stanley reported a return on tangible common equity of 22.6%, compared with 23.5% a year earlier. The decline is worth noting despite the increase in absolute earnings, as investors assess whether higher revenues are translating into proportionately stronger returns.

Total expenses increased during the quarter, including higher compensation costs, trading-related execution expenses and technology spending. The firm’s reported expense efficiency ratio remained at 67%.

The bank also recorded a $148 million provision for credit losses, compared with no provision in the prior-year quarter. This included $105 million in charge-offs related to certain corporate and commercial real estate loans that had largely been provisioned for previously.

Investment Management provided another area of weakness, with revenues falling approximately 12% to $1.46 billion, partly reflecting a reversal of accrued carried interest associated with a private fund.

Morgan Stanley repurchased approximately $1.5 billion of its common stock during the quarter and maintained a standardized Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio of 14.9%.

For investors, the results establish two competing trends. Equity trading and asset gathering are supporting substantial revenue growth, while fixed-income weakness, higher operating costs and credit provisions remain constraints on profitability.

The next test will be whether Morgan Stanley can maintain its trading momentum, generate recurring fees from newly acquired wealth assets and improve returns as capital markets adjust to higher interest rates.
