Western Digital Stock Falls 3% After the $4.64 Beat: What…

Western Digital stock closed at $343.67 on Friday, down $10.52 or 2.97%, completing the first full trading session after a quarter in which the storage company beat earnings expectations and guided well above consensus.

That makes the tape more interesting than the earnings headline. Western Digital initially rose about 4% after reporting results Thursday evening, then gave those gains back. Friday’s decline leaves WDC about 9.2% below Wednesday’s $378.51 close despite results that cleared almost every published hurdle.

The stock now carries a market value of about $128.64 billion and sits well inside a 52-week range of $121.72 to $799.87. Friday volume reached roughly 13.95 million shares, above the recent 10-day average of about 9.74 million, so the move was not simply an illiquid after-hours reaction.

Western Digital Closed at $343.67 After Beating by $0.56

Western Digital reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 non-GAAP earnings of $4.64 a share against an Investing.com consensus of $4.08, a $0.56 beat. Revenue rose 55% year over year to $4.38 billion, above the roughly $4.14 billion consensus.

The guidance was stronger again. Western Digital expects fiscal second-quarter revenue of $5.1 billion, plus or minus $100 million, with non-GAAP earnings of $5.80, plus or minus $0.20. Its midpoint gross-margin forecast is 60.5%, up from 58.1% in the quarter just reported.

FinanceFeeds’ Friday read-through to Sandisk made the important distinction: the published results were not weak. The question was whether investors were already demanding numbers materially above consensus after the extraordinary run in AI-linked storage stocks.

Why Did Western Digital Stock Sell Off After a Beat?

Friday provides a cleaner answer than Thursday’s tape because the broader technology selloff had begun to ease. The Nasdaq slipped only about 0.2% on Friday after Thursday’s 2.6% fall, while Western Digital still lost almost 3%.

That suggests the move cannot be explained solely by the market-wide AI selloff.

One concern is where storage pricing sits in the cycle. Western Digital said improved pricing helped drive the quarter, but CFO Kris Sennesael also told analysts that NAND and DRAM input costs are rising in an unusually tight supply chain. Those higher costs mean near-term cost-per-terabyte reductions will run below the company’s longer-term target of roughly 10% a year.

TrendForce still expects overall NAND contract prices to rise 15%-20% sequentially in the fourth quarter, supported by AI-server demand. But its October 21 update said suppliers are becoming divided over further increases, spot trading remains thin and the pace of contract-price gains is likely to narrow.

That is the tension now embedded in WDC: demand remains strong, but investors are asking whether the rate of pricing improvement is close to its peak.

The second issue is AI infrastructure financing. This week’s selloff followed renewed scrutiny of the amount of capital and debt required to keep building AI data centers. Meta’s spending plans pushed its credit-risk indicator to a record high, while debt-heavy AI infrastructure companies have also been under pressure. Western Digital’s cloud customers are precisely the companies funding that buildout.

The latest FinanceFeeds Western Digital stock scenario analysis therefore treats the recent decline as a de-rating problem rather than evidence that demand suddenly disappeared.

What Western Digital’s Guide Says About Sandisk on 29 October

    The immediate read-through is Sandisk.

SNDK closed Friday at $1,238.03, down 1.82%, and reports fiscal first-quarter 2027 results after the market closes on Thursday, October 29. Its conference call begins at 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Western Digital’s guide gives Sandisk investors two competing signals. Strong cloud demand and a $5.1 billion revenue outlook support the idea that AI-storage spending remains intact. At the same time, Western Digital’s complaint that NAND input costs are rising is effectively evidence of pricing power on the supplier side, which should favor Sandisk.

The problem is expectations. If investors now believe NAND pricing is already near the strongest point of the cycle, another earnings beat may not be enough. FinanceFeeds’ week-ahead Sandisk analysis puts the emphasis on the next-quarter guide rather than the September-quarter EPS number.

Micron’s Taiwan Dispute Is the Third Leg of the Memory Trade

    Micron adds a supply-side complication.

Eleven union officials at its Taoyuan operations completed a 24-hour warning strike on Friday. The action did not directly halt production, but the dispute remains unresolved: roughly 70% of the Taoyuan union’s members rejected Micron’s proposed profit-sharing arrangement, and the next negotiations are scheduled for October 27.

Micron stock nevertheless rebounded 2.46% on Friday to $877.55, while Western Digital fell 2.97% and Sandisk lost 1.82%. FinanceFeeds’ Micron week-ahead analysis tracks the labor dispute alongside next week’s memory-sector earnings.

For Western Digital, Friday’s close is therefore the useful new information. The company beat by $0.56, grew revenue 55% and guided to $5.80, yet the stock still fell almost 3% in the session that had the full earnings call to digest.

That does not say storage demand has broken. It says investors have moved the bar. Sandisk finds out how high it is on October 29.
